Falling to the Depths...

Beloved,

“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. 20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians 3:18-20

I included these verses in my devotional last week. As I sat meditating on the scriptures more deeply our Father continued to press new truths upon my heart. He invited me to contemplate these things:

“My Daughter,” He said, “Falling in the depths of my love is like being awaken from a deep slumber.” Friends as I continued to listen to the Spirit, He gave me more understanding and He then compared it to being in a mirage; an optical illusion. In a state of desperation a desert traveler may be tricked and caught up in a mirage; sometimes so deeply engrossed, that it takes a sudden jolt from another person to refocus on reality. Can you imagine being pulled out of this mirage, realizing it’s deceitfulness, and yet still choosing to return? How foolish right?

Choosing to continue through the desert and wait for the real oasis on the other side takes faith, determination, and love; and as the Father reminds us in His word, “The greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

To experience God’s ultimate and complete love is not only an awakening from the fictitious illusion that is the mirage, but it is also falling into the deep, long, and wide love of Christ described in Ephesians.

These words, taken from a Richard Rohr meditation continues to articulate this experience of Agape love:

“The more we live in the Wonder and welcome our placement in this very heart of Love, the easier it is to trust . . . to “release our fears” . . . to live without proclaiming certainties . . . to settle into this very core we can only call Love. When we learn to fall, we learn that only by letting go our grip on all that we ordinarily find most precious—our achievements, our plans, our loved ones, our very selves—can we find, ultimately, the most profound freedom. In the act of letting go of our lives, we return more fully to them. We have held onto the concept of Wonder as a guiding concept . . . a way to focus our attention in these days when life is so uncertain. We have absolutely no idea what the author of Love is asking of us . . . except we are fairly certain the Beloved One is not asking us to lay claim to any certainties at all. We are fairly sure that the Beloved is simply holding us tight . . . holding us close . . . holding us in Pure Love in the palm of Love’s hand. . . . And what else could we possibly ask for?”

As we enter Holy Week and prepare our hearts to remember the life and gift of Jesus, may you be reminded of His love. And for those of you who haven’t yet, may you choose it.
