The Standard

I’m the oldest of seven. Growing up this meant that many more responsibilities were expected of me than that of my younger siblings. From the chores that needed completing to simply how I behaved in the grocery store; a level of standard was required of me that wasn’t of my siblings. This is a truth of which, as a child, I often complained about. I just couldn’t understand why my little sister would be allowed to watch cartoons as I was still being given yet another task to accomplish. Now, as an adult, and further as a Christian, this concept of responsibility is one I understand. Luke 12: 4-8 reminds us, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

I admit that there are times that this is difficult for me to live out. It’s easy to complain about the standard when it seems that others are living more “fun”, simpler, lives. It’s easy to even catch myself comparing my walk to other Christians. Sister Judy isn’t having to fast or study for hours she seems to be doing fine. My cousins aren’t bad people and say their Christians; they’re enjoying some nights out at the club. Surely it’s okay for me too...

The standard of living that God is calling you to has everything to do with the role you have in His church and for His Kingdom. Everyone has a role; and if He has called you to a higher level of impact and a greater platform, your level of responsibility is different. What is required of you and expected of you is different. Therefore in order to fulfill your purpose, you MUST subscribe to that standard.

In Matthew 25 Jesus explains this with the Parable of the Talents.

He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be ba hard man, reaping cwhere you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, dyou have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You ewicked and eslothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 fFor to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And gcast hthe worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place gthere will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

What are you doing with what God has given you? How are you fulfilling your purpose? Don’t run from your responsibilities expecting that the grass will be greener on the other side. Everyone isn’t CEO material or can go to the Olympics. It takes hard work to be at the top. It’s takes a different level of discipline and commitment. Yes, you do have to wake up at 5AM, yes your diet does look different, yes you do have to be well read. Your friends may be living differently but that may work for them and be okay for them. You’re not them! Your purpose is not theirs.
