Covenant and not Contract

Dear Friend,

Often we enter into our relationships as contract agreements, for a long time I couldn’t get this. Marriages were becoming corporate mergers and friendships were developing based on contractual obligations of what you can do for me and what I can do for you. Not many people enter into their “divine relationships”, because they don’t want to take risk. Divine relationships are associated with risk, which yields an amazing reward. I understand the hurt and pain from the past, I promise I get it. However I know that if you operate in a relationship based on contractual obligations (if you do this, then I will do this), then you are missing out on the fullness of the relationship (Abraham and Lot had a contract of mistrust between them see Genesis 31:49).

God is not a contractual God, He is a covenant God. He is a God that created us to be in relationship with Him first and then in relationship with others (see Matthew 22:36). There is no established partnership agreement that says, “If you don’t do this I won’t love you, provide for you or take care of you.” Every promise established by God, is in our covenant agreement when we accepted Jesus Christ into our lives as Lord and Savior. It is an unconditional love that we are missing from our relationships. God didn’t desire for us to be in contract, He swore by Himself (see Hebrews 6:13 and be reminded YOU are the seed of Abraham). He wanted the same thing reflected in our relationships. Not contractual obligations that are based on mistrust and certain benefits, but covenant relationships that are rooted and established in love (1 Peter 4:8).
