Are Selfies Making a Selfish?
Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
I often struggle with everything that we have going on, on social media. Are we talking too much about the wrong things, are we focused too much on ourselves? Why are we looking for the world to validate us, to tell us we look good, how we should feel, where we are going? What am I getting out of looking at a picture of myself every day, how much am I supposed to talk about myself?” My ultimate question I asked myself, would Jesus take selfies? Sure, some of us will say, selfies, are just for fun, but are they subtle ways, of becoming self-absorbed?
If we exchange the word poor with humble, you will see that Jesus, in His famous sermon on the mount, was saying to us, there is a blessing that comes in walking in humility. If I walk in true humility, there is a low view of my importance, I can’t be vain, I can’t be prideful, I can’t spend a lot of time talking about myself to other people. I was looking in the bible for moments Jesus, made grand entrances. When did he sit around people and rattle off His resume, and talk about all that He accomplished. What billboard did he post? Did he boast in himself or in the lord? John 14:13, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” He, even though He was the son of God, never looked to be glorified; He only wanted to glorify the father. He never spent a lot of time talking about Himself, He knew who He was, He walked in the authority but He knew who’s He was and who deserved the ultimate glory.
Blessed are the poor (humble) in spirit for theirs is the reward of heaven. 2 Corinthians 10:13, “We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us, a sphere that also includes you.”
Prayer: Father please forgive me for having a prideful spirit, for being more self-centered, than God centered. I want my life to reflect Christ, in which I brag on you. In Jesus Name. Amen
