No Other God!
Dear Friend,
Can I be honest, this one stung a little bit. Often I find myself constantly with my phone in my hand. Can we chew on this today?
Exodus 20:3 Thou shall have no other God’s before me.
How many of you could leave your cell phone home for an entire day? I’m not talking on accident but on purpose, intentionally leave it at home. That means you can’t text, no phone calls, you can’t log on to social media, you won’t be able to play your favorite game, you would have very limited to access to outside people. I do believe that the “cell phone god” does exist! Our lives have become so overwhelmed by our cell phones, we can’t leave them at home. Most of us use them as home phones as well, but why have they so easily taken over our lives? They provide a gateway to so many things, good and bad. They provide answers for us, “Just google it”. They help us manage our money, “download the app’, they keep us connected to the outside world at all time “just hit me in my dm.” If we lose one we almost act like we have lost our mind.
Now someone will say they aren’t that important to me, and they may not be, but for most of us, they are. If it was just about having a phone, why not have a simple one? Why do we need a smart phone? Is It making us really dumb? Is the cell phone the idol (the image of the God), have we allowed it to become our God? What are we worshiping that keeps us from interfering with the one true “King”? What are we allowing to lord over us? What are we allowing to be savior in our life? Here are some questions that you can ask yourself? God allows you and gives you plenty of opportunity to judge yourself, 1 Corinthians 11:31 says "But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged."
Questions:
Is it coming in between my relationship with me and with God?
Do you look for it to provide the answer?
Does it cause you to spend senseless money?
Is it making decisions for you? Are you choosing it, over God?
Is it causing you to come out of character, are you lying for it, stealing for it?
Is there an idol to it?
Do I pick up my phone more than I pick up my bible?
Do I have ears to hear?
What is God saying to me now? Is something in the way of my hearing? Sensing God?
God provides us these opportunities to check ourselves. These moments for self- awareness, or self-checks draw us into a closer relationship with Him. His desire is that no one or nothing is before Him, He is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5).
Prayer: Father open my eyes and heart so that I can see the areas in my life, in which you are not first. Show me my idols and my false Gods. Holy Spirit give me the strength to overcome them so that I can put you first, In Jesus Name. Amen
